Needlepoint for beginners

Never picked up a needle before? Here's the four-step process I wish someone had shown me.

1

Pick your canvas

Check your LNS or SRC Stitch's "beginner canvas" section, typically a 13 mesh design with minimal details for you to master the basics.

2

Choose your floss

Two to three skeins of your desired floss is plenty for your first piece. Keep the colors and textures simple.

3

Learn one stitch

Master the basics before you get fancy. Basketweave and Continental are the two I was faced with. I am team continental through and through, but the preference is personal. Check out these easy visual charts below. (The videos on steps and poles can be very confusing for newbies). You can practice on the exterior of your design before committing or jump right in!

4

Stitch & Finish

Self-finishing your first project can be quite the undertaking if you aren't privy to hand sewing. Hot take… hot glue is okay too! Check out I like for learning how to assemble your first bag charm or ornament. Be proud of your first project, and welcome to the needlepoint community!

SRC Stitch, founder

A paintbrush, an arts degree, and an entrepreneurial mindset.

SRC Stitch started on my apartment kitchen island that doubled as a vanity, breakfast nook, and sometimes a study. I had picked up needlepoint as a hobby my junior year of college to ease nighttime worry and wind down for bed more easily, and suddenly it had become my around-the-clock hobby. I was stitching in meetings, in the car, while watching TV, on the treadmill, and while babysitting when the kids went to sleep.

My mom suggested I use my artistic skills to make my own designs, as she was not a fan of the price! I explained to her it's a custom artwork; not just anyone can paint a beautiful canvas. It's handmade by real people. She then encouraged me to become one of those people. My friends in the NTYC podcast group supported my first painting endeavor, the Gator Marie canvas. From there, I figured, why stop at that? Now everything I see in my day-to-day life feels like it could be the next big canvas.

Every piece here is designed in my mind before it's ever stitched. Currently, I am pursuing a master's degree in business management and leadership, so this business is not just a solo effort but one that has been guided by the help of my family and friends who brainstorm with me, run post office errands, motivate me to pursue this dream, and not give up!

I paint every order at my house, wrap it myself, and I am overjoyed every time a piece finds a new home. I hope one of my pieces will find its home with you.

xoxo, SRC Stitch
